Calne Short Mat Bowls Club celebrates its five year anniversary

On Monday 23rd October 2023 the club celebrated five years of short mat bowling at Beversbrook Sports Facility, in the Community Hall.

Started in 2018 with two secondhand mats and some sundry equipment, the club was a success from the start, and in 2019 a grant from Sports England enabled the club to upgrade to three new mats and playing apparatus.  Just before Covid broke in March 2020 there were as many as 33 at some sessions.  Members started playing in the WSMBA Winter League in 2022 and have played in many County competitions, as well as taking part in internal club competitions.

Members before the session started

The celebrations on Monday brought together current members, past/retired members and some of those who have assisted the club.  After the bowls’ session a buffet was provided for refreshments and a raffle was held.  The Club secretary, Stuart Beard, gave a small speech, explaining how the club had evolved over the last 5 years.  He thanked those who have helped the club, and the club members for their support over the years.

First ever competitive League Game

On Thursday 20th October 2022, in the evening, we played our first ever competitive league game, at home to Marshfield, nearly 4 years to the day that the club started. It ended with the scores Calne  45 (5pts) – Marshfield 28 (4pts). It was a very enjoyable evening, not only for the teams but also for the members playing on the 3rd rink.  Needless to say the floor was up to its normal tricks and prove d challenging for both teams. We look forward to the return match on the Friday 28th October at 19-15.
